Simmons Tops GNAC Women's Athletics Programs with Most Student-Athletes Named to Academic All-Conference Team

WINTHROP, Mass. - Simmons University placed 84 student-athletes on the 2018-19 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference team to mark the highest total of honorees among school's that sponsor women's athletics, it was announced today by the GNAC.

A total of 1,030 student-athletes from 13 full-time and 12 associate member schools received the honor. Recognized student-athletes maintained a 3.25 cumulative grade point average for the balance of their academic career, completed at least one full season of competition at a GNAC institution and was at least sophomore status academically. 

In order to be eligible for the league's academic all-conference squad, a student must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA and have reached second-year academic status. The gross total of 1,030 is a +22 increase from the 2017-18 Academic All-Conference Team.

For the ninth consecutive year, all nine of the Sharks' eligible athletic programs were recognized by the GNAC. Included in the Sharks' total are five dual-sport athletes to bring the school's total representation to 89 spots on the all-academic squad. Five of Simmons' athletics teams either tied or led the conference in academic honorees from their respective sports. Simmons swimming & diving led all GNAC squads with 19 competitors named to the Academic All-Conference Team, while women's soccer's total of 15 and field hockey's count of 13 both tied for the top spot in the league. Simmons women's lacrosse topped all GNAC lacrosse teams with 10 representatives, while women's tennis boasted five student-athletes to tie for the most in the league. The remaining four athletics programs, which compete in the GNAC for Simmons were also well-represented with softball placing eight on the academic squad, followed by seven from basketball and six each from volleyball and cross country. 

Simmons sponsors 10 athletics programs, including crew, which competes in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Each team earned a respective GPA of at least 3.32 for the 2018-19 academic year and the department as a whole posted a 3.59 GPA. A total of 13 Simmons student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the academic year.
