NORTON, Mass. - The Simmons College field hockey team was defeated by host Wheaton College, 3-1, this evening at Nordin Field in Norton, Mass. The Sharks' three-match win streak comes to an end as they fall to 4-4, while the Lyons improve to 6-2 on the season.
Following 26-plus minutes of scoreless play, both teams combined to score three goals in a span of 94 seconds. Wheaton opened the scoring at 26:13 when sophomore Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H.) redirected a shot by senior Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) just inside the right post for her second goal of the year to give Wheaton a 1-0 advantage. The score ended a stretch of 236:13 of play that Simmons had not allowed a goal and a string of 221:13 for sophomore keeper Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) for the Sharks.
First year forward Samantha Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) wasted no time answering for Simmons with a long run down the middle of the field and a hard shot into the lower left corner of the cage for her fourth marker of the season to even the score just 48 seconds later. The Lyons came right back when first year midfielder Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) answered with the go-ahead goal 46 seconds later as she fired a mid-range shot behind the Simmons keeper and into the cage for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-1 edge at 27:47 of the opening half.
Junior forward Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass.) rounded out the offense by cleaning up a rebound in front of the cage at 61:23 for Wheaton's third and final tally.
Rastello finished with nine saves for the Sharks, while senior goalie Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass.) stopped 10 shots for the home team.
Simmons will be in action again on Sunday, September 28 when it hosts Thomas College at 1:00 p.m., while the Lyons travel to Smith College on September 27 for a noon tilt.
