LEICESTER, Mass. - First year forward Missy Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) and first year midfielder Analise Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) each tallied their first respective collegiate goals to help the Simmons College field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over host Becker College in the Sharks' season opener this afternoon in Leicester, Mass. Simmons moves to 1-0, while the Hawks fall to 0-1.
Maiewski wasted no time in netting her first career score for the Sharks, taking a feed from senior midfielder Amy Cronin (Georgetown, Mass.) at the 7:38 mark of the first half. Giarrusso's goal capped the day's scoring at 5-0 with just 53 ticks left on the clock in the second half.
Junior forwards Madeline Koufos (Needham, Mass.) and Mary Neidhardt (Middlefield, Conn.) combined for Simmons' second tally of the match with Koufos setting up Neidhardt at 23:39 to give the visitors a 2-0 lead, which held up until halftime.
Junior midfielder Robin Powell (Richmond, Vt.) got on the board as well for the Sharks at 53:32 of the second half, before sophomore forward Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.) followed just 2:27 later with a goal of her own to give the Sharks a 4-0 lead.
Gabrielle Gallo stopped 16 shots for Becker as the Sharks owned a 26-0 shot advantage. Simmons also racked up 14 penalty corners and allowed just three on the day.
The Sharks will be in action again on Thursday, September 3 when they head to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 6:00 p.m., while the Hawks host Anna Maria College at 4:00 p.m.
