WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College's Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Field Hockey Rookie of the Week for the week of October 2-8, it was announced today by the league. The honor marks the second time this season that McNamara has received the accolade, having been named both the GNAC's top rookie and also goalkeeper for the week of September 4-10. She is the only player in the conference to have earned the Rookie of the Week award multiple times this season.
The newcomer did not allow a goal in 132:41 minutes of play over two matches and stopped all four shots that she faced, while posting a 2-0 record and recording a shutout. McNamara began the week by turning away four shots in 62:41 of action to help the Sharks to a 2-0 victory at Colby-Sawyer College on October 5. A graduate of Nauset Regional High School, McNamara was between the pipes for all 70 minutes to post her second career shutout in a 5-0 victory at Rivier University on October 7.
For the season, the rookie has started all 12 matches for Simmons and ranks third among conference leaders with a 1.44 goals against average and a .758 save percentage in 825:09 minutes of action. McNamara stands alone among league rookies on the GNAC leaderboard. She has made eight or more saves on three occasions, including a season-high of 13 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on September 5.
The Sharks have won eight of their last nine matches and own a 9-3 overall record, including 5-0 in conference play. Simmons returns to action on Wednesday, October 11 when it hosts Mount Holyoke College on Daly Field at 6:00 p.m.
