Field Hockey Edges Regis (Mass.), 4-3

BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons University field hockey team received four goals from four different players and hung on to defeat visiting Regis (Mass.), 4-3, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 5-10 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Pride fall to 2-10 and 1-5.

Simmons owned a 14-5 shot advantage with Regis making the most of its opportunities. The Sharks also held a 7-3 count on penalty corners.

Simmons wasted no time in cracking the scoring column when junior forward Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.) sent a short cross in the goalmouth to a waiting Adrianna Fournier (Newport, Vt.), who scored her first collegiate goal, with a shot from the right slot. The marker gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at the 4:11 mark of the opening half.

The Pride knotted the match at 1-1 with a goal on a penalty corner with 7:17 left in the first period of play. Senior back Kiana Koke (Queensbury, N.Y.) received a cross from the top of the circle and then found senior forward Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) in the right slot for the first of three goals that she would score on the night for the visitors.

Simmons came back with a pair of goals in a span of 32 seconds prior to the end of the half to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Maggie Fuzak (Buffalo, N.Y.) set up both markers for the Sharks. Fuzak took the insert pass on a penalty corner from classmate Lily D'Anna (Woodstock, Vt.) and sent a cross from the left side of the cage to junior Hannah Scott (Claremont, N.H.), who finished with her third tally of the year with 2:47 to play in the half. Simmons scored again when Fuzak fed Trull for her second score of the season with 2:15 showing on the first half clock to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead at the intermission.

The Sharks scored on another corner early in the second half when first year Emily Plummer (San Diego, Calif.) sent the insert to the top of the circle, where senior Meghan Fontaine (Westminster, Mass.) blasted a shot that found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season to give the home team a 4-1 lead just 3:39 into the second stanza.

Simmons looked to have the match in hand, but Regis cut the deficit to 4-2 on another goal from Callahan just 78 seconds later on a penalty corner. First year back Sarah Tetrault (North Easton, Mass.) set up Callahan with a cross to the front of the cage for a marker with 30:03 remaining in the game.

Neither team found the back of the cage for the next 39-plus minutes until the Pride pulled to within a goal with 33 ticks left on the clock. Callahan carried the ball into the goalmouth on a breakaway and beat the Sharks keeper for her third career hat trick to make it 4-3, but it was as close as Regis would get.

Sophomore goalie Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) earned the victory with a save for Simmons, while sophomore keeper Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) stopped five shots for the Pride.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, October 20 when they travel to Paxton, Mass. to take on GNAC foe Anna Maria College at 11:00 a.m., while Regis hosts Dean College on October 18 at 7:00 p.m.
