WORCESTER, MASS. -- First year midfielder Maddie Beckwith (Winslow, Maine) scored her first collegiate goal for the Simmons University field hockey team, but host Clark University scored 34 seconds into the second overtime to come away with a 2-1 victory this afternoon at Granger Field in Worcester, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-1 in their season opener, while the Cougars improve to 1-0.
Simmons scored with less than four minutes to play in regluation to knot the game, despite being outshot 22-11 before the overtime periods. The Sharks controlled the penalty corner opportunities by a count of 9-2 and owned a 4-2 shot margin the first extra period of play.
First year forward Kerry Lefebvre (Freeport, Maine) scored her first collegiate goal to win the match when Clark capitalized on a corner following a hard shot from Maire O'Donnell (Oak Park, Ill), that was tipped past the goalie by Lefebvre.
Sophomore midfielder Emma Boland (Redding, Conn.) cracked the scoring column first for the Cougars when she took a feed from junior midfielder Carden Maloney (Worcester, Mass.) and found the back of the cage with 4:47 left in the third quarter.
Beckwith pulled Simmons even with 3:15 to go in the fourth quarter on her first career marker.
Junior goalie Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) turned away 11 shots for the Sharks, while sophomore goalie Grace Sawyer (Windham, Maine) registered the win for Clark with eight stops.
Simmons returns to action on Wednesday, September 4 when it travels to Westfield, Mass. to take on Westfield State University at 7:00 p.m., while the Cougars host Worcester State University on September 1 at 11:00 a.m.
