WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Simmons field hockey (9-5, 7-3 GNAC) extended its win streak to five games following a 5-0 shutout of the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) (4-10, 3-7 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, Saturday afternoon. With seven conference wins on the year, the Sharks currently have their best conference mark in program history.
The Sharks jumped on the board first in the second quarter on first-year Emilia Elko's sixth goal of the season. Elko scored her second goal of the game to give Simmons the 2-0 advantage..
Elko continued to help power the Shark offense, connecting with classmate Hannah Groves twice before the end of the first half. Groves found the back of the goal in the 21st minute then added her fifth goal of the season on assists from Elko and first-year Sydney Gonyea to send the Sharks into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
Coming out at the start of the second half, Elko recorded her third goal of the game and ninth of the season in the 41st minute as the Sharks cruised to the 5-0 win. Junior goalkeeper Emma Sheehan earned her third shutout of the season, registering three saves.
- First-year Emilia Elko registered three goals and two assists and has scored in four of the last five games for the Sharks.
- Fellow first-year Hannah Groves recorded her first multi-goal game scoring twice in the first half.
