KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Simmons College softball team fell to Muhlenberg College, 9-2, this afternoon at the Osceola Softball Complex's Field 1 in the Sunkissed Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Sharks dip to 1-3 on the season, while the Mules improve to 3-3.
Muhlenberg broke open a 3-1 game with five runs in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead, before coming away with the win.
Simmons was led by sophomore pitcher Alex Soqui (Acushnet, Mass.), who went 2-3 with a pair of doubles and a run batted in, while sophomore Bridget Garach (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior left fielder Michaela Reeves (Reading, Mass.) each collected a hit.
Senior catcher Amelia Shelley (Jamison, Pa.) and junior third base Kristina Qualben (Madison, N.J.) each went 2-4 with two RBI to pace the Mules.
Senior starting pitcher Haley Fedak (Glen Gardner, N.J.) allowed two unearned runs on four hits over seven complete innings and walked a batter in addition to four strikeouts to earn the victory for Muhlenberg, while Soqui took the loss for the Sharks after yielding eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk.
The Mules scored single runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Muhlenberg cracked the scoring column in the top of the first inning on a throwing error and added their second run in the second when Qualben opened the frame with a leadoff single and later came around to score on a Sarah Schubert (Malvern, Pa.) ground out. Fedak stroked a leadoff single to center and later came around to score on a throwing error.
Simmons cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the third. Garach led off the inning with a single and later scored on an error by the Muhlenberg shortstop.
A two-run double off the bat of Qualben fueled a five-run fifth for the Mules. Shelley, junior first base Kristy Selby (Clarksville, Md.) and senior second base Karissa Astrella (Parsippany, N.J.) each plated a run with a single during the inning as well. Muhlenberg added a single run in the sixth as well to build a 9-1 cushion. Senior outfielder Hannah Caiola (Mount Laurel, N.J.) served a single to right field and later scored on a two-out single to right off the bat of Shelley.
The Sharks put another run on the board in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore center fielder Molly Hennessey (Charlton, Mass.) reached on an error and scampered around the bases to score on a double down the right field line from Soqui to make it 9-2. It was the last run for either team for the rest of the contest.
Simmons will be in action again tomorrow when it takes on Muskingum University at 3:45 p.m. on Field 5, while the Mules play Heidelberg University at the same time.
