KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Simmons College softball team was only able to muster two walks in a 13-0 loss to DeSales University this evening at the Osceola Softball Complex's Field 4 in the Sunkissed Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Sharks fall to 1-5 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-5.
DeSales batted around in each of the first three innings and did all of its scoring prior to the fourth frame.
Junior catcher Carly Benjamin (Glen Rock, N.J.) led the Bulldogs, going 3-3 with four runs batted in and a home run, while first year shortstop Hallie Muffley (Walnutport, Pa.) was 2-3 with three RBI and a homer. First year first base Reilly Kerr (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished a home run short of the cycle with a triple, double and single to go with two runs batted in, while first year center fielder Ciarrah Holmqvist (Bangor, Pa.) knocked in a pair of runs with two hits.
Senior starting pitcher Hailey Warner (Warrington, Pa.) did not allow a hit over five innings of work and walked two in addition to six strikeouts in five innings of work for DeSales. Sophomore Alex Soqui (Acushnet, Mass.) took the loss for the Sharks, allowing five runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Benjamin cracked a three-run home run and Muffley later made it a five-run first inning when she hit a two-run home run for the Bulldogs. DeSales tacked on three more runs in the top of the second to take an 8-0 lead. Kerr plated a run with a double for the Bulldogs and Benjamin's RBI single gave DeSales all the runs it would need for the game.
The Bulldogs scored five more runs in the third to take a 13-0 lead. Sophomore designated player Madison Sias (Flemington, N.J.) brought home two runs with a single to left. Muffley and Holmqvist knocked in a run each, while Kerr's triple drove in another run.
The Sharks return to action tomorrow when they take on Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 1:30 p.m. at the Osceola Softball Complex's Field 5 in the Sunkissed Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
