Simmons Basketball closes out the 2010-11 season with a 9-14 overall record, and a 4-8 Great Northeast Athletic Conference record. After qualifying for the conference tournament for the past nine seasons, the Sharks failed to make the cut this year and enter the offseason resolved to work hard for next season.
"This season as one of missed opportunities and inexperience in closing out big games," said Head Coach Tony Price. "We controlled our own destiny and unfortunately we just could not string a few games together and go on a win streak."
Despite the disappointment of a shorter season, Simmons had several notable performances. In November, the team captured the Elms College Invitational and sophomore Emily Thomas (Cheshire, Conn.) was named Tournament MVP while junior Alex Acloque (Randolph, Mass.) was named to the All Tournament team.
Sophomore Liz O'Connor (Milton Mass.) finished the regular GNAC season ranked fifth in scoring (15.2 ppg) and 13th in rebounds (7 rpg). Thomas was ranked ninth in scoring (13.8 ppg) and ninth in rebounding (7.4 rpg). Acloque was ranked third in rebounding (9.7 rpg) and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds in November against Bard College—the sixth-highest single game tally in program records. Freshman guard Hannah May (Hamden, Conn.) was ranked first in 3-point field goal shooting percentage.
Simmons traveled to Key Largo, Fla. to ring in 2011 at the Key Largo Classic during the winter break. Junior guard Brittany Dolloff (Hollis, N.H.) averaged an impressive average of 20ppg over the tournament's two games.
The young squad graduates just one senior, Liane Lantagne (Haverhill, Mass.). Lantagne, a co-captain, led the Sharks by example and her contributions as a four-year athlete will be missed.
"Unfortunately we were not able to play the brand of basketball (aggressive, physical and defensive toughness) consistently that has brought us success over the past 8 seasons," said Price. "Hopefully we will learn from this and move on with the goal of getting back on track and competing for the GNAC Championship next season."
