BOSTON, Mass. -- First year Liz Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) put up her third double-double of the season as Simmons Basketball defeated the visiting University of Saint Joseph's Blue Jays 66-63 for the Sharks first GNAC win Saturday afternoon in their last home game at the Holmes Sports Center. The Sharks move to 3-17 overall with a GNAC record of 1-8, while the Blue Jays end the day with 11-13 overall and 4-6 in GNAC play.
Brasa led the team with 15 points, while seniors Leah Davis (Cranston, R.I.) and Hannah May (Hamden, Conn.) netted 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Sharks 40% shooting percentage from the floor was enough to bring in the win against the Blue Jays.
The game was off to a charged start with the teams tied 10-10 in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led the Blue Jays in the first half with 8 points with support from teammates Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) and Brianna Ferraro (Waterbury, Conn.), each with 6. At the end of the half, May secured the Sharks 38-30 lead with a jumper from just inside the arc.
The second half began with two 3-pointers by Davis and May, widening the Sharks lead. The Blue Jays fought hard and closed the gap to 52-54 with less then eight minutes to play. After a Blue Jays foul, Davis secured two shots to add to the Sharks lead, 61-64 with just 20 seconds left. After a quick Blue Jays foul, Davis found herself at the line again and buried both shots to give the Sharks a cushion. Ferraro brought the Blue Jays to within one off two shots from the line but the Blue Jays were unable to convert and the game finished with the Sharks winning, 63-66.
Simmons travels to the Rivier Raiders on February 18 and the Blue Jays travel to play the Albertus Magnus Falcons the same day in more GNAC action.
