Basketball Falls to Suffolk, 80-50, in Emerson Tip-Off Consolation Game

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's basketball team was defeated by Suffolk University, 80-50, this afternoon in the Consolation Game of the Emerson College Tip-Off Tournament at Bobbi Brown & Steven Plofker Gym in Boston, Mass. the Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Rams improve to 2-1.

Suffolk shot 47.4% (27-57) from the floor, while holding Simmons to 27.8% (15-54). The Rams dominated the glass with a 55-22 rebounding advantage as well.

Senior guard Kimberlee Hixon (Taunton, Mass.) led the Sharks with 14 points and added two assists, two steals and a rebound, while senior guard Jamie Zoldy (Watertown, Conn.) chipped in with eight points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Senior forward Liz Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) came off the bench to net eight points, grab three boards, block a pair of shots and come up with a steal. 

Senior guard Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) led the Rams with 15 points in 19 minutes on 5-7 from the floor in addition to four rebounds, a steal and two assists. First year guard Alexis Hackett (Charlton, Mass.) was perfect off the bench, going 5-5 from the field and 1-1 from the line to score 11 points, while adding three rebounds, three assists and a steal. First year forward Katelyn Rourke (Watertown, Mass.) pulled down nine rebounds to go with seven points, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

The teams were tied at 6-6 with 4:52 to play in the first quarter, before Suffolk went on a 10-2 run to take a 16-8 lead with Hackett and junior guard Alexandra Nagri (Salem, N.H.) combining for eight points during the stretch. Brasa later made a layup to cut the deficit to 18-13 for Simmons, but a five-point burst bumped the Rams' lead to 23-13, before settling for a 29-20 halftime advantage.

Senior forward Ashley McAdams (Freeport, N.Y.) converted a layup for the Sharks to make it 29-22 with 8:47 showing in the third quarter, but Suffolk put together a 15-2 stretch over the next five minutes to increase its lead to 44-24 with 3:43 to go in the period. Simmons later closed to within 48-32 following back-to-back layups from Brasa at 1:42.

The Rams scored 12 of the next 13 points to end the third quarter and extend into the fourth period, including five from Bourikas and a three-pointer to take a 60-33 cushion with 9:04 showing in the fourth period. Sophomore forward Lauren Brandau (Madison, Conn.) later knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Suffolk lead to 64-42 with 6:55 to play in the game for the Sharks. The Rams countered with five unanswered points, before Simmons scored six of the next eight points to cut the deficit to 71-48 with 3:52 left in the quarter. Suffolk closed out the game on a 9-2 run to set the final.

The Sharks will be in action again on Tuesday, November 22 when they host Wellesley College at 7:00 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium in their home opener, while the Rams head to New London, N.H. to play Colby-Sawyer College on the same night at 6:00 p.m.
