Sharks Defeat Saints, 17-7

Simmons Lacrosse defeated Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Emmanuel College, 17-7, in their final regular season match-up at home on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Sharks improve to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The loss ends the season for the Saints who finished 3-9 overall and 2-7 in the GNAC. Saturday was also Senior Day for the Sharks. Lacrosse will graduate just two athletes from their young program this spring; Sarah Pontarelli (Naragansett, R.I.) and Jen Szkolt (Bondsville, Mass.).

Simmons scored first with a free position goal from junior Lee Sutherland (Tufftonboro, N.H.) six minutes into play. Madeline Leahy would respond for Emmanuel off another free position shot within the next minute to tie the score at one. Simmons went on to score the next four goals unanswered and headed into the half with a comfortable 7-3 lead.

In the second half Simmons was quick to get back on the board with a goal from sophomore Meg Coffey (Wilmot, N.H.) with less than two minutes off the clock off a pass from freshman Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Although the Saints found four more goals in the second half, they could not keep up with the Sharks' quick offense and aggressive defense.

Simmons' scoring was lead by three goals apiece from freshman Taylor Nisbet (Dartmouth, Mass.), sophomore Emily Kaley (Manchester, Maine) and junior Meaghan Maurice (Portland, Maine).

Sophomore Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) picked up the win for the Sharks after making 11 saves, while Hillary Dandurant made the start for the Saints, tallying 11 stops in the loss.
