MADISON, N.J. - First year forward Erin Montambault (Watertown, Conn.) netted the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead the Simmons College soccer team in a 2-2 tie this afternoon vs. Ramapo College at the FDU Florham Classic in Madison, N.J. The match was the season opener for both teams. The teams are each 0-0-1 on the season.
Montambault's first marker was the initial scoring strike of the contest came when junior midfielder Alexis Eusebio (Dartmouth, Mass.) hooked up with her on a thru-ball from midfield to give Simmons a 1-0 lead at 37:29 of the first half.
The Sharks took their lead into halftime, before Ramapo first year forward Gabriella DiLiberto (East Brunswick, N.J.) took a cross in the box from classmate Nani Vizcaino (Lodi, N.J.) and scored at the 55:51 mark to knot the score at 1-1. The score stayed tied for the next 26-plus minutes until the Roadrunners took the lead when junior midfielder Autumn Herring (Barnegat, N.J.) converted a penalty kick with just 7:32 left to play in regulation.
Simmons answered quickly when junior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) set up Montambault for a shot into the left side of the net just over two minutes later at 84:34 to pull the Sharks even at 2-2.
First year forward Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.) looked poised to give Simmons the victory, but her shot with 2:49 left in the second overtime hit the crossbar to keep the contest tied.
First year keeper Casey Halle (Watertown, Mass.) played the final 71:18 of the match, stopping two of four shots she faced for the Sharks, while starting keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) turned away both shots she saw in the opening 38:42 of play for Simmons. First year keeper Hayley Walther (Bethlehem, Pa.) allowed a goal and made three saves in just under 65 minutes of action for Ramapo, while classmate Taylor Marcialis (Stony Point, N.Y.) registered four saves and allowed a goal in just over 45 minutes for the Roadrunners.
The Sharks return to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. when they take on Saint Joseph's College Long Island, while Ramapo plays host Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham at 4:30 p.m.
