BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Simmons College soccer team scored a pair of unanswered goals in the second half, but it wasn't enough in a 3-2 loss to host Babson College this afternoon in Babson Park, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-2-2 on the season, while the Beavers extend their unbeaten streak to four at 3-0-1.
First year Victoria Penta (Belmont, Mass.) opened the scoring for Babson just 3:38 into the match, converting a feed from senior Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) for her first collegiate goal. DiPhilippo carried the ball for nearly 50 yards through the midfield before sending a through ball to Penta, who calmly put her shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
Penta scored her second marker of the game in the 11th minute, beating a defender to a loose ball in the box and sliding a shot past the keeper and inside the right post to give the Beavers a 2-0 edge. DiPhilippo then made it 3-0 with her first goal of the season following a corner kick in the 42nd minute for Babson. After her header off a service from junior Kristina Simonson (Easton, Mass.) hit off the crossbar, DiPhilippo was able to track down her rebound and loft a shot over Hayes and into the upper corner.
The Beavers looked to add to their lead when junior Meghan Tyson (Scarborough, Maine) was denied on a breakaway in the 55th minute as Simmons junior keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) came racing off her line to make a sprawling save.
The Sharks broke through in the 63rd minute as first-year forward Kashka Gammon (Nahsua, N.H.) notched her second goal of the year. Junior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) beat a defender along the end line and fed Gammon, who buried a low shot inside the left post from the penalty spot to cut the Babson led to 3-1.
Simmons sophomore Elise Nothacker (Philadelphia, Pa.) made it a one-goal game in the 74th minute, lofting a 35-yard shot that sailed over the Beavers' keeper and under the crossbar for her first collegiate marker. The Sharks' best opportunity to equalize came just under nine minutes later as Greer saw her header off a long free kick by senior defender Paige Wilcox (East Sandwich, Mass.) from point-blank range sail just wide.
Senior Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) made four stops to earn the victory for Babson, while Hayes also finished with four saves for Simmons.
The Sharks return to action on Saturday, September 13 when they head to West Harford, Conn. to take on University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) at 1:00 p.m. to open the conference slate, while the Beavers host Wesleyan University on the same day at 2:30 p.m.
