WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College women's swimmer Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Corvias Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for the week of November 9-15, it was announced today by the league. The honor marks the third time this season that a Simmons swimmer has earned the award. Sophomore Natalie Giraldi (Belmont, N.H.) was tabbed for the weeks of October 19-25 and November 2-8.
Swisher led all competitors in the dual meet with Wellesley College on November 14 with 27 points. The junior won all three individual events that she entered and also helped the Sharks to a second-place finish in a relay event. A graduate of La Cueva High School, Swisher placed first in the 200-yard freestyle by more than three seconds with a mark of 1:57.69, before taking the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.01. She capped her individual efforts with a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, hitting the wall at 2:14.69. Swisher anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay and helped Simmons post a time of 1:42.63 to place second.
An Exercise Science major, Swisher has been outstanding this season, finishing first in seven of nine individual events, including a perfect 7-7 in dual meets. She has dominated the freestyle and backstroke events at different lengths this season, winning six different events, including the 50, 100 and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle.
Swisher has been named the GNAC Athlete of the Week 12 times for her career and was chosen as the GNAC Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year last season. The junior currently holds five individual school records and has been a part of five school relay team standards. She also earned All-NEISDA status in five events at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association Championship last year.
The Sharks are currently 3-1 on the season and return to the water on Saturday, November 21 when they host University of New England at the Holmes Sports Center at 1:00 p.m.
