WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College women's swimmer Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Corvias Women's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of November 16-22, it was announced today by the league.
The honor marks the fifth time this season that a Simmons swimming and diving athlete has earned the award and the second time this season that Fleming has been tabbed. She was also selected as the league's top weekly rookie for the week of October 19-25. First year Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) has earned the award three times for the weeks of October 26 to November 1, November 2-8 and November 9-15.
Fleming turned in the most impressive week of her young career, winning three events to score 27 points to tie for the meet high in a 212-68 victory over visiting University of New England. The rookie dominated the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best mark of 2:00.86 to win by nearly eight seconds and later won the 100-yard backstroke by more than four seconds with a time of 1:04.02. The Northampton High School product capped the meet by winning the final individual event of the afternoon, hitting the wall at 1:04.54 in the 100-yard individual medley. Fleming also swam the anchor leg to help the Sharks' 400-yard medley relay squad to a first-place showing with a time of 4:11.31.
The first year has put together an outstanding initial campaign, finishing no lower than third place in any dual meet this season. She has won four different events with victories in the 50-yard freestyle in her collegiate debut on October 24, 2015 vs. Westfield State University and her three wins vs. UNE. Fleming has also logged four second-place efforts in freestyle events, ranging from the 50 to 200 yards in length.
Simmons is currently 4-1 on the season and returns to the water on Tuesday, December 1 when it heads to Babson Park, Mass. to take on Babson College at 6:00 p.m.
