WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College women's swimmer Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Corvias Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for the week of November 16-22, it was announced today by the league.
The honor marks the fourth time this season that a Simmons swimming and diving athlete has earned the award and the second straight week that Swisher has been tabbed. Sophomore Natalie Giraldi (Belmont, N.H.) was tabbed for the weeks of October 19-25 and November 2-8.
For the second straight week and the seventh time in her career, Swisher won three individual events in a meet. The junior tallied 27 points to tie for the meet lead in a 212-68 victory over visiting University of New England on November 21. Swisher won the 50-yard backstroke by nearly two seconds on a time of 30.49, before earning a victory in the 50-yard freestyle by just five one-hundreths of a second at 25.32. A graduate of La Cueva High School, she won her third event of the day in the 100-yard freestyle by an impressive 4.23 seconds with a time of 54.58. Swisher set the pace to begin the meet as the lead leg of the team's 400-yard medley relay squad, helping it to a first-place showing with a time of 4:11.31.
The Exercise Science major has been outstanding this season, finishing first in 10 of 12 individual events, including a perfect 10-10 in dual meets for the Sharks. She has dominated the freestyle and backstroke events at different lengths this season, winning the 50, 100 and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle. Swisher has hit the wall first in the 50-freestyle three times, while topping the field in the 50-backstroke and the 100-freestyle on two occasions each.
Swisher has been named the GNAC Athlete of the Week 13 times for her career and was chosen as the GNAC Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year last season. The junior currently holds five individual school records and has been a part of five school relay team standards. She also earned All-NEISDA status in five events at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association Championship last year.
Simmons is currently 4-1 on the season and returns to the water on Tuesday, December 1 when it heads to Babson Park, Mass. to take on Babson College at 6:00 p.m.
