Swimming & Diving Sweeps Gordon and Elms in Double-Dual Meet

BOSTON, Mass. ? The Simmons College women?s swimming team defeated visiting Gordon College, 212-66, and Elms College, 236-45 in a double-dual meet, while Gordon?s women defeated Elms, 163-83, and Elms? men outscored Gordon?s, 134-105, this afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center Natatorium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks are now 3-0 on the season, while Elms? women are 0-2 and its men are 1-0. Gordon?s women are now 1-1, while its men own a 0-1 mark.

BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons College women's swimming team defeated visiting Gordon College, 212-66, and Elms College, 236-45 in a double-dual meet, while Gordon's women defeated Elms, 163-83, and Elms' men outscored Gordon's, 134-105, this afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center Natatorium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks are now 3-0 on the season, while Elms' women are 0-2 and its men are 1-0. Gordon's women are now 1-1, while its men own a 0-1 mark.  

Simmons swept the top three spots in nine different individual events vs. Elms and four events vs. Gordon. 

Senior Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) and first years Laura List (Bedford, Mass.) and Cristina Samaniego (Avon, Conn.) all scored a pair of first places for 18 points vs. both Gordon and Elms to lead the Sharks. 

First year Amber Collard (Yorba Linda, Calif.) earned a pair of first place showings vs. Elms for Gordon and also scored a first-place effort vs. Simmons to lead the Fighting Scots, while Gordon junior Alexa Bragg (Trumbull, Conn.), first year Anne Lemmer (Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore Caris Lyons (Orrville, Ohio) each registered first-place finishes against Elms. 

Sophomore Desi Milar (Springfield, Mass.) earned a pair of first place finishes vs. Gordon, while first year Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) tallied 17 points with a first place and two second place efforts vs. Gordon to lead Elms. 

Swisher won the 200-yard freestyle over both teams with a mark of 1:59.03 and outstroked the field in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.99 for Simmons. List scored her first victory of the day over both Elms and Gordon in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 29.73, before adding the 100-yard freestyle to her mantle with a mark of 56.03. Samaniego earned her first collegiate win on the one-meter board with a score of 170.25 and later won the three-meter event for the first time with a score of 169.27. 

Senior Emmie Lindholm (Sterling, Mass.) took the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 12:19.00 to win by more than 14 seconds to score wins over both Elms and Gordon. Junior Natalie Giraldi (Bedford, N.H.) swept 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 32.93 for the Sharks, while sophomore Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.)did the same in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 25.78. Junior Michaela Morris (Duxbury, Mass.) topped both teams in the 100-yard butterfly, hitting the wall first at 1:04.70, while sophomore Jason Erichsen (Banks, Ore.) claimed first among all three teams with a time of 1:16.08 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) was the first-place finisher over both schools. Senior Hannah Plourde (Westfield, Mass.) topped the field in the 200-yard individual medley thanks to a time of 2:26.50. Simmons also dominated the relays, defeating both teams in the 200-yard medley relay behind Swisher in the backstroke, Giraldi's breaststroke, Morris on the butterfly and Fleming in the anchor freestyle. The Sharks' time in the 400-yard freestyle win was 3:46.09 to win by more than 15 seconds, fueled by Fleming, Swisher, Simpson and List.

Collard's win in the 50-yard butterfly for Gordon over both Simmons and Elms came by more than a second and a half at 28.64. Her win against Elms in the 1000-free was on a time of 12:33.93, which was good for second vs. Simmons. Bragg won the 50-yard backstroke over Elms with a mark of 30.05 and finished second to Simmons, while her 100-yard backstroke time of 1:07.63 beat Elms but stood third against Simmons. Lemmer won the 200-IM against Elms with a time of 2:35.16 and bested Elms in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.60 to place second against Simmons. Lyons topped Elms in the 200-yard freestyle on a mark of 2:08.50, which was good for third against Simmons and her time of 59.45 earned her a win vs. Elms in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Megan David also scored a win over Elms in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.06 to finish second to Simmons.

Milar clocked the fastest time in the 50-yard breaststroke against Gordon for Elms at 36.69 and did the same in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:22.48. Scianna's time of 6:04.00 gave her a victory over Elms and placed second against Simmons in the 500-yard freestyle.  She also finished second in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle against Gordon.

Elms won nine individual events against Gordon's men and the teams split the relay events. Sophomore Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) topped all scorers with 27 points on three first place finishes for Elms, while junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.), senior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) and senior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) all won a pair of events for the Blazers. 

Junior Jack Cicchelli (Middletown, R.I.) won two events to lead Gordon, while senior Langdon Kessner (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 17 points with a first place effort and two second-place finishes. 

Grippo won the 50-yard backstroke, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke with times of 26.47, 24.16 and 58.15, respectively. Burgos took home the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 11:04.20 and later added the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.28. He also placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke to tally 22 points for the day. Cirillo touched the wall at 1:53.31 to win the 200-yard freestyle and also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.74. He also added a second-place effort in the 100-yard freestyle. Bergstrom scored 22 points as well, winning the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard IM in 51.32 and 1:00.72, respectively and placed second in the 50-butterfly. 

Cicchelli won both butterfly events, clocking a time of 1:00.32 in the 100 and 25.54 in the 50 for Gordon. Langdon's win came in the 50-yard breaststroke on a time of 31.54 and finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-IM. 

The Gordon quartet of junior Caleb Petersen (Dover, Mass.), Kessner, Cicchelli and senior dean Drukker (Bedford, N.H.) combined for a winning time of 1:52.13 in the 200-yard medley relay and Elms' four of Grippo, Burgos, Cirillo and Bergstrom took home the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:31.02.

The Sharks return to the pool on Saturday, November 12 when they head to Wellesley, Mass. for a 1:00 p.m. meet with Wellesley College, while Gordon heads to Weston, Mass. for an 11:00 a.m. start with Regis College on November 5. Elms heads to Standish, Maine to swim against Saint Joseph's College on November 5 at 1:00 p.m.
