Swimming & Diving Defeats St. Joseph's (Maine) (211.5-40.5) and Western New England (199-62)

STANDISH, Maine - The Simmons College women's swimming & diving team won all 14 events in a double-dual meet sweep over host Saint Joseph's College (Maine), 211.5-40.5, and Western New England University, 199-62, this afternoon in Standish, Maine. The Sharks have beaten seven straight opponents and improve to 10-2 on the season to finish with double-digit victories for the fifth straight year. Western New England defeated Saint Joseph's, 169-75, and is now 4-4 on the year, while Saint Joseph's falls to 3-9.

Simmons was led by junior Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) and first year Maria Soraghan (East Hampstead, N.H.) as each scored at least 18 points for the Sharks. Fleming won the 100-yard freestyle by almost four seconds with a time of 57.63 and added a win in the 100-yard individual medley in the final individual race of the afternoon with a mark of 1:05.42. She also added a second-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle to lead all swimmers with 22 points. Soraghan won both individual events she entered, starting with a two-second win in the 50-yard backstroke with a mark of 30.81, before adding a 500-yard freestyle time of 5:32.39 to win the event by nearly 22 seconds. She capped the meet by swimming the second leg of the 200-yard freestyle to combine with sophomore Laura List (Bedford, Mass.), and first years Haley Summers (Hudson, N.H.) and Emily Buttafuoco (Londonderry, N.H.) on a winning mark of 1:46.07.

Buttafuoco also helped Simmons win the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet with the opening backstroke leg. She was followed by junior Jason Erichsen's (Banks, Ore.) breaststroke, Summers' butterfly and first year Olivia Walz (Natick, Mass.) on the freestyle anchor leg to contribute to a time of 2:00.85 for the Sharks' first win to set the tone for the day. Sophomore Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) dominated the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:59.96 to win by more than two and a half minutes. Erichsen earned an individual win as well, taking the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 34.40, before first year Anna Leedham (Lowell, Mass.) placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:23.22. Summers posted a win the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 27.35, while Erichsen won the 200-yard backstroke by more than two seconds behind a time of 2:17.76. Junior Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle with a clip of 2:02.88, while classmate Kara Smith (Eastham, Mass.) added to Simmons' list of victors with a winning mark of 30.50 in the 50-yard butterfly.

The Sharks return to the pool on Saturday, February 3 for their final dual meet of the season at 12:00 p.m. in South Hadley, Mass. against Mount Holyoke College. Saint Joseph's competes again on the same day in Wenham, Mass. vs. Gordon College at 12:00 p.m., while Western New England hosts Gordon on January 24 for a 4:30 p.m. meet.
