WESTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University women's swimming & diving team swept a double-dual meet this afternoon, defeating host Regis (Mass.), 189-107, and Colby-Sawyer College, 226-51, this afternoon at the Regis Aquatics Center in Weston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 9-2 on the season, while Regis is 6-3 and Colby-Sawyer falls to 1-9.
Simmons won 11 of 16 events and boasted three swimmers with multiple wins on the day.
Senior Jason Erichsen (Banks, Ore.), junior Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) each tallied a meet-high 22 points with a pair of victories and a second-place showing, while senior Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) won both individual events that she entered and was part of both of the Sharks' winning relay squads.
Erichsen touched the wall first in both breaststroke events, winning the 50-yard race with a time of 34.24, before taking the 100-yard event by just under three seconds with a mark of 1:12.61 for Simmons. Scholand finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.84 and dominated the 500-yard freestyle by more than 20 seconds with a time of 5:26.50. Fleming showed her versatility with triumphs in the 50-yard freestyle (25.97) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.40). She swam the lead backstroke in the winning 200-yard medley relay to open the meet, followed by Erichsen's breaststroke, first year Sarah Singleton (Mission Hills, Calif.) in the butterfly and junior Laura List's (Bedford, Mass.) freestyle leg to anchor the race and combine for a time of 1:57.83 to edge Regis by less than half a second. List opened the 200-yard freestyle in the day's final event, followed by Fleming, senior Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) and Scholand to contribute to a time of 1:45.21 to win by more than three seconds.
Simpson cruised to victory in the 1000-yard freestyle for the Sharks, winning the afternoon's first individual event by just under 53 seconds on a time of 11:04.87. List touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 57.19 for Simmons, while Singleton came out on top in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:04.86.
Junior Elisabeth McQuaid (Marlborough, Mass.) won both one-meter events for Regis, edging Sharks' sophomore Sara Manjikian (Belmont, Mass.) in the day's first one-meter event by just a tenth of a point at 172.85 to 172.75 on five dives and won the day's second one-meter dive with a score of 248.70 in a six-dive set.
Junior Jessica Zernitsky (Newton, Mass.) won the only swimming event for the Regis, clocking in at 29.04 to claim the 50-yard butterfly.
Colby-Sawyer swimmers won a pair of events with sophomore Jinnae Jang (Fall River, Mass.) placing first in the 50-yard backstroke by just one one-hundreth of a second, out-touching Regis junior Sarah Leonard (Brockton, Mass.), before first year Kelsey Brown (Douglas, Mass.) finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:02.92.
Simmons returns to the pool on Saturday, January 19 when it hosts Merrimack College at 11:00 a.m., while Regis hosts Elms College on the same day at 12:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer is in action again on January 16 when it travels to Chicopee, Mass. to take on Elms at 1:00 p.m.
