WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons University's Katelyn Quinlan Haverhill, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of October 21-27, it was announced today by the league.
Quinlan becomes the second Shark in as many weeks to earn the weekly honor after classmate and former Haverhill High School teammate Meg Driscoll (Haverhill, Mass.) was tabbed last week.
The first year tallied 12 points for Simmons in a 220-77 victory over visiting Westfield State University on October 26, winning the 50-yard breaststroke for her first collegiate win with a time of 33.67 to capture the race by almost a second and a half. Quinlan also placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:14.25. The rookie was an integral part of the team's win in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet, swimming the breaststroke leg to contribute to a winning time of 1:59.05. In addition, Quinlan closed out the meet to swim the opening leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay, helping the Sharks to a second-place finish to give them both top spots in the event.
For the season, Quinlan has registered four top-five finishes, including fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle at Division I Merrimack College last week. She also helped Simmons to a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the anchor leg of the race.
The Sharks are currently 1-1 on the season and return to the water on Friday, November 1 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on host Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Brandeis University, Smith College and Babson College in a quad-dual meet at 6:30 p.m.
