BOSTON, Mass. – Seniors Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.) and Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) and first year Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) were all double-winners to lead the Simmons University women's tennis team over visiting Curry College, 9-0, this afternoon at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 5-10 on the season, while the Colonels fall to 0-19.
Rios and Medici combined on an 8-3 victory at number one doubles over the Curry tandem of Sidara Cash-Sortwell (South Portland, Maine) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.), while Mariski teamed with Simmons first year Kaili Shorey (Vassalboro, Maine) to post an 8-2 win over the Colonels sophomore duo of Samantha Gilbert (Beford, Mass.) and Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) at second doubles. Curry was unable to field enough players and had to forfeit third doubles as well as the match at sixth singles.
Rios earned a straight set victory over Cash-Sortwell with a 6-4, 6-0 effort at first singles to win her fifth consecutive singles match for the Sharks, while Medici dropped just two games to down Daigle, 6-2, 6-0 at number two singles. Mariski did not drop a game at number four singles for Simmons, defeating Gilbert, 6-0, 6-0.
Senior Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) cruised over Merrill at third singles with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph for the Sharks, while Simmons sophomore Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.) registered a 6-3, 6-0 victory at fifth singles over Curry first year Rachel Lawlor (Meriden, Conn.).
The Sharks return to the courts tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. when they host Emerson College at Daly Courts, while the Colonels head to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley University at 3:00 p.m. on April 19.
