Volleyball Falls in Regular-Season Finale at WPI, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Simmons College volleyball team was defeated by host Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-12), this evening at Harrington Auditorium in Worcester, Mass. The Sharks season-long eight-match win streak comes to an end as they fall to 11-14 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 11-19.

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Simmons College volleyball team was defeated by host Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-12), this evening at Harrington Auditorium in Worcester, Mass. The Sharks season-long eight-match win streak comes to an end as they fall to 11-14 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 11-19. 

As a team the Engineers hit a season-best .305 far surpassing its previous year-high of .233 versus Bridgewater State.  The Crimson and Gray trailed only twice in the match - both early in the second set - and began the third stanza by notching nine of the first 11 points to ensure a triumph for the first time in three weeks. 

Simmons received four kills each from first year middle blocker Emmee Ashby (Payson, Ariz.) and first year outside hitter Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.).  Woodward hit .286 for the guests without committing an error in 14 attempts.  Sophomore setter Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) aided the Sharks' effort with 13 assists while Woodward and sophomore libero Alex Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) both amassed eight digs.

Sophomore Kenzie Whalen (Hollis, NH) hit .833 and belted 10 kills without a miscue in in 12 attempts.  to lead WPI, while Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) registered a double-double with 10 kills and a match-best 14 digs en route to her fifth double-double of the season and eighth of her career. Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA), who had missed the previous six matches with an injury, handed out 35 assists and added eight digs while Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) led all players with 11 kills as Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) and Sam Bircsak (Acton, MA) chipped in with six and five apiece.  Libero Kelly Rathje (Scitute, MA) stuffed the stat sheets with the six digs and four service aces and Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) pitched in with seven digs.

Two players from each team finished with a pair of block assists, including Feeley and Kleeper from WPI and Nicole Alberghini (Northboro, MA) and Abby Hart (Westfield, MA) from Simmons. 

WPI wraps up its 2014 season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. NEWMAC road match at Mount Holyoke.  Simmons turns its attention to the GNAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday November 4th.  Pairings will be available after Saturday's conference action.
