WINTHROP Mass. – Simmons College's Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of October 3-9, it was announced today by the league.
In the Sharks' only match of the week, the first year was dominant, posting her ninth double-double of the season in a 3-0 victory over host Lasell College on October 5 with 14 kills and 16 digs, to average 4.67 kills and 5.33 digs per set. The outside hitter owned a .343 hitting percentage and also added three aces and three block assist to contribute to an 18.5-point effort.
For the season, the Agua Fria High School graduate had been one of the top rookies in the conference all season. She is the only player in the league to average more than four kills (4.02) and three digs (3.36) per set. Weeg places 29th in the nation among all players and third for first years in kills per set, while ranking 36th with 4.47 points per set and fourth among first year players in NCAA Division III. She stands second in kills and points per set and 10th in digs per set in the GNAC, while her .239 hitting percentage is the 11th-highest mark. The hitter spiked for 29 kills on October 1 vs. Emerson College for the 13th-highest five-set total in the nation this year and the most for any first year player. An Exercise Science major, Weeg has registered nine double-doubles on the season for kills and digs, while recording 20 more kills on four occasions and a career-high 21 digs to open her career vs. Colby-Sawyer College on September 2. She has put down 10 or more kills in all but three matches, including double-digits in each of her last eight outings. In 53 sets over 14 matches, she has compiled 213 kills, 178 digs, 17 aces and 22 total blocks.
Simmons is currently 5-9 on the season, including a 3-2 mark in conference play and takes on Saint Joseph's College on Monday, October 10 at 1:00 p.m.
