Volleyball Downed at Wentworth, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore setter Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) posted her fifth double-double in as many matches to start the season to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team in a 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 25-13) loss to host Wentworth Institute of Technology at Tansey Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Leopards improve to 3-1.

Wentworth hit .200 for the match and got better in each set as the night went on, while racking up nine total blocks and 15 aces in the win.

Simmons held on for the 26-24 opening set win to take a 1-0 match lead, but the Leopards came roaring back with a 25-18 decision in the second set. Wentworth took the third set, 25-19, despite the Sharks rallying from a 22-11 deficit. The Leopards cruised in the final set, 25-13.

Gray-Williams put down 12 kills and set for 13 assists to go with seven digs and three aces for Simmons, while first year outside hitter Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) fell just one kill short of a double-double with nine to go with 10 digs and an ace. Sophomore libero Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) finished with a match-high 17 digs and added three aces and junior setter Kenna McCarthy (Shelter Island, N.Y.) set for a match-best 17 assists in addition to picking up two digs.

Junior Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) registered 19 kills on a .306 hitting percentage and added 10 digs to lead Wentworth. Rogoz tacked on four aces to her stat line for 24 points overall, which ranks second all-time for most points in a game at Wentworth, of which she is the record holder with 24.5 points. Quick and first year Mary Zlotosch (Durham, N.H.) put down eight kills apiece, while Zlotosch and senior Lillie Clark (Vista, Calif.) swung into four aces each. First year Jade Iadarola (Miami, Fla.) registered 11 digs to round out double-digit defense for the victors. Lassiter led the Leopards defense at the net with five blocks assisted and one solo block, factoring into their team total of nine in the win. Juniors Maddy Tomastik (Portland, Ore.) and Clouse split setter duties, and dished out 16 and 15 assists, respectively.
