WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- Simmons Swimming and Diving finished 11th out of 22 teams this weekend in the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships held at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center. Leading the Sharks was sophomore Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.), who won the 100 IM event in a new school record time of 1:02.21, the first Simmons swimmer to win a New England event since records were kept.
"Seeing Jen standing on top of the awards podium was a very proud moment for me and the team. She is an incredible athlete and fought hard for that title," said Head Coach Mindy Williams.
The Sharks accumulated 36 season-best times, many of which were also lifetime best swims during the weekend. The Sharks broke five school records, including the 200 Free relay of Amy Davis (Southbury, Conn.), Chloe Davis (Merrimack, N.H.), Marissa Soucy (Mont Vernon, N.H.), and Collins and the 400 Free relay of C. Davis, Hillary Wong (Quincy, Mass.), A. Davis, and Collins, who both finished in the top eight. The 800 Free Relay of A. Davis, C. Davis, Wong, and Collins beat their previous best time for a new record of 8:22.43.
Collins broke the school record in the 100 Free and finished in the top eight in all three of her individual events, taking home 76 points for the Sharks.
C. Davis finished 22nd in the 200 Back, 18th in the 200 Free and 14th in the 50 Back, scoring 23 individual points for Simmons.
A. Davis added 31 points, finishing 12th in the 50 Fly and 18th in the 100 IM, while junior Molly Bohannon (Westbrook, Conn.) added 30 points with an 11th place finish in the 200 Fly and a 17th place finish in the 1650 Free.
Senior Steph Bitzas (Westfield, Mass.) added 18 points for the Sharks, while Anne Karasek (Brookline, Mass.), Wong and Liz Zamagni (Chelmsford, Mass.) combined for 13 points.
"The team's performance at New Englands was the perfect ending to a very successful season for us. The team really increased their training volume and intensity this past winter and their end-of-season times definitely reflected their hard work. I am so proud of this group of athletes. They raced with their hearts and stayed focused through weekend. They deserved every second that they shed," said Coach Mindy Williams.
