BOSTON, Mass. - First year outside hitter Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) posted her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs to lead the Simmons College women's volleyball team in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16) loss to visiting Endicott College this evening at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Gulls win their third straight match to improve to 7-3.
The Endicott College women's volleyball team hit .230 and took advantage of 14 opponent service errors to defeat host Simmons College, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16), this evening at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. The Gulls win their third straight match and improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 1-4.
Junior outside hitter Lauren Sheehan (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) spiked for a team-high seven kills and did not commit an attack error for the Gulls, while posting a .389 hitting mark. She also added a pair of digs and a block assist. Senior outside hitter Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Calif.) put down six kills and hit .278 for the night to go with a service ace, 12 digs and an assisted block. First year libero Mackenzie Kennedy (Andover, Mass.) got down for a match-high 14 digs and fired an ace, while sophomore setter Mareena Clotfelter (Poulsbo, Wash.) doled out 16 assists, picked up four digs and serve up an ace for Endicott.
The teams played within two points of each other through the first 30 points of the opening set with Simmons holding a 15-14 edge, before the Sharks scored three unanswered points as part of a 9-5 stretch, to take an 18-14 lead. Simmons maintained a 20-17 lead following a kill from Hart, but the Gulls ripped off five straight points as part of an 8-2 run to close out the frame with a 25-22 win. McIntyre put away the set-deciding point for Endicott.
The Gulls scored four of the first five points of the second set and later owned an 11-9 lead before expanding their lead to 17-11 with a 6-2 run. Endicott later held a 20-14 margin, before scoring three unanswered points to take its biggest lead of the night at 23-14. Sheehan spiked for the 25th point for a 25-16 set win and a 2-0 match lead for the Gulls.
Endicott carried its momentum into the third frame, scoring seven of the opening eight points for a 7-1 lead. The Gulls later maintained a 12-6 lead, before the Sharks showed some life with a 4-1 burst, paced by a pair of kills from Hart, to cut the deficit to 13-10. The home team stayed within three points at 17-14 before Endicott pulled away with an 8-2 stretch, led by two kills from senior middle blocker Rasa Hamel (Clinton, Conn.), to post a 25-16 score to take the match in three sets.
Simmons returns to action on Saturday, September 17 when it opens the Great Northeast Athletic Conference slate on Saturday, September 17 at 11:00 a.m. in New Haven, Conn. vs. Albertus Magnus College. The Gulls return to the court on the same day, taking on Clark University at 1:00 p.m. as part of a tri-match in New London, Conn. at United States Coast Guard Academy.
