Bears Tame Sharks In Friday Night Showdown

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — In the second meet of the season, the Sharks suffered a loss to the Smith College Bears in a Friday night battle. The Sharks put up a good fight, but were ultimately outpaced by their competitors.

  • Laura Luthi collected the first top-three finish of the night for her team, securing third place with a time of 12:39.03 in the 1000 yard freestyle.
  • Carli Quinlan took first in the 200 yard freestyle, getting her hand on the final wall in 2:00.79.
  • Bee Eckels came in third in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:19.03.
  • Anna Kelly earned third place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 28.25.
  • Luthi claimed second place in the 200 yard backstroke, touching with a time of 2:27.86.
  • Kelly touched the wall third in the 500 yard freestyle, going a time of 5:59.25.
  • Quinlan was the second swimmer to come into the wall for the 100 yard butterfly. Clocking in at 1:01.21, she was barely out-touched by the first place finisher in a nailbiting final lap.
  • Eckels finished first in the 400 yard individual medley, due to exhibition swims from Smith, with a time of 5:30.04. 
  • As a result of exhibition swims from Smith, the Sharks went one, two in the final relay of the night. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Quinlan, Luthi, Kelly and Isabel Barry-Ruiz secured first place (1:51.96). In second, the team of Anna Pelliccio, Charlotte Doherty, Ainsley Horan and Julia Long went a time of 2:05.45.
  • For diving, Melanie Powers came in fourth with a score of 151.40. Her teammate Autumn Welch dove exhibition with a score of 154.55. 
In a quick turnaround, the Sharks will head out again early tomorrow morning (Sat. Nov. 8)  to take on Wellesley and Merrimack. The meet is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Looking ahead to next week, the Sharks will return to the pool when they host the University of New England at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14.
