Sharks Eliminated From NAC Tournament After Quarterfinal Loss

Sixth-seeded Simmons Field Hockey was defeated by third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington, 6-1, in North Atlantic Conference field hockey first-round action Saturday at Prescott Field. With the loss, the Sharks end their season with a 6-11 record, while the Beavers (12-5) are scheduled to visit No. 2 Husson University in the NAC semifinals on Wednesday.

Hattie Laliberte (Guilford, Maine) led Farmington with two goals and an assist, while Annie Agnew (Guilford, Maine) assisted on three goals and Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) chipped in two goals. Emma Deans (Gorham, Maine) with a goal and an assist and Kaitlyn Bullen (Farmington, Maine) with a goal completed the scoring for the winners.

Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) scored off a TJ Cowin (Newry, Maine) assist for the Sharks, who were outshot 15-4.

Barry finished off crosses by Laliberte and Agnew to give the Beavers a 2-0 9:03 into the contest. Laliberte netted an unassisted marker to push the hosts lead to 3-0 at 23:28. Sutherland slimmed the deficit to 3-1 at intermission.

Despite being held to four second-half shots, Deans, Bullen and Laliberte each collected scores to help Farmington pull away for the 6-1 win.

Sarah Brown (Windham, Maine) manned the pipes for Farmington with two saves. Simmons keeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) stopped five shots for the Sharks.
