Sharks Come Back to Defeat Blue Jays, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. -- After dropping the first game 25-23, the Simmons Volleyball team won three straight games to defeat the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays, 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21) Monday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. The Sharks are now 8-18 overall and 5-1 in the GNAC, while the Blue Jays fall to 8-13 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

 

The Blue Jays took a 6-1 lead in the first game off kills by Ciara Perez and errors by the Sharks. Simmons began to chip away off kills by Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) and Megan Chamberlin (Milford, Mass.) tie the game at nine. The Blue Jays scored four straight points but the Sharks tied the game at 14 of a kill by Kat Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.). The game went point for point through 23 but Rebecca DiPinto's kill brought the University of Saint Joseph to within one and a Sharks service error tipped the scale, 25-23.

 

The Sharks hit .269 in game two off strong play by Chamberlin, who posted 12 kills on the night and Alberghini, who hit 11 kills with just one error for a .526 hitting percentage. Game two was all tied up at 10 points apiece before the Sharks took control offensively and never trailed again.

 

Game three was hard-fought until the end, as USJ came back from a five-point deficit to tie the game at 21. After three errors by the Blue Jays, Morgan Kieon (North Attleboro, Mass.) hit the final kill for the 25-23 win, and a 2-1 lead.

 

Simmons out-hit the Blue Jays .219 to .034 in game four behind stellar performances by Rossi Fish (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Alexandria Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.). Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) posted 35 assists on the day, while three different Sharks recorded ten or more digs.

 

The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at home versus Rivier at 7:00 PM. The Blue Jays host Curry College on Oct. 17 at 7:00 PM.
