Neidhardt, Saltamartini Lead Field Hockey over Wheelock, 7-0

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – First year forward Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.) and sophomore forward Mary Neidhardt (Middlefield, Conn.) each tallied a pair of goals to lead the Simmons College field hockey team over visiting Wheelock College, 7-0, this evening on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks win their fourth straight match to improve to 8-4 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 1-5.

Simmons dominated the shots by a count of 36-4 and held a 13-3 advantage on penalty corners as well.

Saltamartini opened the scoring for the Sharks when she slammed home the rebound off her own shot just 1:40 into the match for a 1-0 edge. Her second marker came off another rebound strike when she put back a shot from sophomore forward Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) with 77 seconds left in the first half for her team-high ninth goal of the year and a 4-0 Simmons lead.

Neidhardt's first marker gave the home team a 3-0 lead when she tipped in a shot, from the left slot, off the stick of Gagnon at 31:29 of the opening half. Neidhardt capped the night's scoring with her fourth tally of the season for the Sharks. She collected a loose ball in front of the cage, sent to her from sophomore midfielder Gabi Henderson (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine), and found the back of the cage with 1:44 remaining in the contest.

Simmons' second goal of the night came inside the first five minutes when sophomore midfielder Robin Powell (Richmond, Vt.) sent a short cross in front of the cage to classmate Amy Wilson (Falmouth, Mass.) for a scoring strike into the left corner at 4:21 for her second goal of the season. The Sharks later scored the first goal of the second half when junior forward Nicole Coolbrith (Uxbridge, Mass.) set up senior forward Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) in front of the cage for a quick shot that resulted in her sixth marker of the year and a 5-0 cushion at 50:32. The assist was the first collegiate point for Coolbrith. Gagnon followed with her first goal of the season at 61:25 to give Simmons a 6-0 margin. Sophomore forward Jillian Mercer (Dartmouth, Mass.) sent a pass from the right side of the circle into the box to assist on the goal.

Sophomore midfielder Emma Panto (Somers, Conn.) led the Wheelock offense with a pair of shots.

Sophomore keeper Hope McDonald (Hingham, Mass.) stopped all three shots she faced to record her second career shutout for the Sharks, while first year goalie Nicole Miranda (Westbrook, Maine) turned away 16 shots for the Wildcats.

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, October 11 when it hosts Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Lasell College on Winsor Field at 11:00 a.m., while Wheelock plays again on October 9, hosting Salve Regina University at 8:00 p.m.
