Volleyball Falls to Emerson (3-0) and Western Connecticut (3-2) on Final Day of Colonial Classic

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Simmons University women's volleyball team dropped matches to Emerson College (3-0) and host Western Connecticut State University (3-2) today on the final day of the Colonial Classic at Feldman Arena in Danbury, Conn. The Sharks fall to 1-3 on the season, while Emerson improves to 4-0 and Western Connecticut is now 3-1.

Simmons played three close sets with Emerson, dropping the first frame, 27-25, before falling in the final two sets, 25-20 and 25-23.

Sophomore Riley Roberge (Peoria, Ariz.) spiked for a team-high six kills and added a dig for the Sharks, while classmate Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) also put down six kills in addition to 15 assists, 10 digs and a pair of aces. First year Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) turned in an outstanding defensive effort with 17 digs and added four kills, while sophomore Morgan Lauvray (Murrieta, Calif.) got down for 10 digs and fired four aces.

Western Connecticut came back from a 2-1 deficit, winning the final two sets, 25-17, 15-5, to hand Simmons a five-set loss to end the day. The Colonials battled to an opening set win of 28-26, before the Sharks looked to be in control with sets wins of 25-14 and 25-13.

First year Krissy Lloyd (Tampa, Fla.) was extremely efficient for the Sharks, swinging for 12 kills and committing just one attack error to go with a .423 hitting percentage and three digs. Classmate Amanda Fortune (Round Rock, Texas) made just one attack error as well and spiked for seven kills in addition to an ace, a dig and a block assist. Gray-Williams registered 13 kills, 16 assists, eight digs and three blocks, while sophomore libero Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) came up with 17 digs and fired a pair of aces. Coombs added 15 more digs and also put down five digs and served up three aces.

Simmons will be in action again on Thursday, September 6 when it travels down the street to take on neighborhood foe Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m.
