First-Years Help Volleyball Sweep Albertus Magnus, 3-0

BOSTON – Simmons volleyball (14-6, 8-2 GNAC) swept Albertus Magnus College (3-20, 1-10 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Krissy Lloyd and sophomore Jayla Parnell combined to hit .423 with 14 kills on 26 attempts and just three errors, while first-year Joenissa Ortiz registered a career single-game high six service aces. Sophomore Kat Simeonidis paced the offense with 27 assists.   

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – Simmons 25, Albertus Magnus 12
Hitting .406 as a team, the Sharks came out of the gate strong taking the first set by a score of 25-12. Lloyd led the way going five of seven from the floor for a staggering .571 attack percentage, while sophomore Claire Conners followed up with three kills and a pair of block assists. 

Set 2 – Simmons 25, Albertus Magnus 17
After trailing 6-1 to start the second set, Simmons rebounded and came back with an 11-5 run to knot up the set at 11-11 and they did not look back, edging out Albertus Magnus, 25-17. First-year Nalani Majkia was nearly perfect from the floor, tallying four kills on five attempts as Ortiz was outstanding from the service line, recording four of her game-high six aces.

Set 3 – Simmons 25, Albertus Magnus 13
The Sharks closed out match following a 25-17 win in set three. Senior middle blocker Amanda Fortune led with three kills on six attempts, while Ortiz and fellow first-year Ava Saltzgiver combined for six aces. Saltzgiver ignited 4-0 run to close out the match with three aces.  

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year Joenissa Ortiz posted a career single-game high six service aces in addition to tallying four kills.
  • Fellow first-year Ava Saltzgiver also registered a career-best with four aces – including three in the final points of the match.
  • Senior Krissy Lloyd posted a .429 attack percentage with a team-high eight kills, while Jayla Parnell chipped in with six kills.
  • Senior Amanda Fortune and sophomore Claire Conners led the Sharks with a pair of blocks.

Simmons returns to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 26 when they travel to Newton, Massachusetts for a make-up match against Lasell University at 6 p.m.
