Tennis Falls Back to .500 on the Season with Loss to Regis

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons tennis (4-4, 1-1 GNAC) dropped back to .500 on the season and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playing falling to Regis College, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pride jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage with a sweep of doubles. Regis' Kiana Thompson and Samantha Gevry defeated junior Olga Zhizhin and Avery Halloran in first doubles, 8-2, while Harmony Lopez and Nora Conner picked up an 8-2 win in third doubles. Junior Vanessa Camargo and senior Libby Weed nearly pulled out the win at second doubles, but fell 8-7.

In the singles portion of the competition, Thompson quickly completed a straight-set victory at first singles, defeating Zhizhin, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Mary Miller forced a third-set tie-break against Connor in sixth singles. After dropping the first set, 6-3, she came back to win the second, 6-4, before falling in the tiebreaker, 10-7.

Weed picked up the lone Simmons win of the day. She knocked of the Pride's Stephanie Beatrice in third singles in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, to improve to 4-3 in singles on the season.

Simmons will look to return to its winning ways on Saturday, September 24 when it hosts the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) at noon.
