Field Hockey Ties Program-Best Mark to Begin The Season with 6-1 Win over Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Simmons field hockey (10-1, 5-0 GNAC) tied its best start to a season with a 6-1 road victory over Albertus Magnus College (0-9, 0-5 GNAC) on Wednesday evening.
 
The Sharks struck first three minutes into the contest. Senior Hannah Groves connected with fellow classmate Sydney Gonyea to take a 1-0 lead in to the second quarter. Four minutes into the second period, the Falcons scored the equalizer to send the game into halftime all square one.
 
Returning the field after the break, it was all Simmons in the second half. Gonyea added to her stat line finding sophomore Katy Paveglio, who knocked on into the back of the cage to take a 2-1 lead two minutes into the period. Just before the third quarter ended sophomore Emma Fissel got into the scoring action taking a pass from first-year Hailey Brisson to extend the lead Shark to two, 3-1, head into the last period.
 
In the final stanza, the Sharks notched three straight goals to put the game out of reach. Groves opened the quarter with goal in the 46th minute, before dishing the ball to first-year Ella Donovan five minutes later to take a 5-1 lead. Gonyea capped off the scoring with her second goal of the game and her 15th of the season.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Buck earned her first win of the season, playing all 60 minutes while making one save.
 
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Hannah Groves led the offense with a goal and two assists for four points on the night.
  • With two goals and an assist, senior Sydney Gonyea vaulted ahead as the GNAC leader in goals (15) and points (34) on the season.
  • Sophomore Emma Fissel notched her first collegiate career goal in the final minute of the third quarter.
GAME NOTES
  • The Sharks are 10-1 to begin the season, tying a program-best mark set in 2022 when they began that season at 2022. 
UP NEXT
Simmons returns to the field on Saturday, October 5 when they break from conference play, hosting Thomas College at 1 p.m.
