Box Score BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (5-1, 2-0 GNAC) improved to 2-0 in conference play following a 4-1 victory over the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Wednesday evening.
The Sharks jumped on the board first, scoring the game's first goal less than six minutes into the period. Sophomore
Katy Paveglio poked in her first goal of the season from senior
Sydney Gonyea at 5:25 to give Simmons the 1-0 advantage.
It appeared as though it was all the Sharks were going to need. Controlling the tempo for the majority of the first half with four penalty corners to the Blue Jays 1 as Simmons took the 1-0 lead into the break.
Returning to the. Field at the start of the second, it was much of the same before USJ scored the equalizer in the 39
th minute and took the game into the final quarter all square at one. However, sophomore
Lilly Taglieri re-gained the lead, finding the back of the cage in the 48
th minute.
A minute later, junior
Zoe Schmaling added an insurance goal to make it a two-goal lead, 3-1, before Gonyea seal the victory with her seventh goal of the season. Sophomore
Haley Bright earned her second win of the season playing all 60 minutes in goal and recording one save.
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Sydney Gonyea registered a goal and an assist for the second straight game this season.
- Sophomore Katy Paveglio notched her first goal of the season in the 5th minute of the contest.
- Fellow sophomore Lilly Taglieri scored the game winner in the 48th for her second goal of the season.
