FITCHBURG, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (3-0) needed an extra seven minutes to secure their third win of the season, pulling out the 4-3 victory in overtime against Fitchburg State University (0-2) on Wednesday evening.
After a scoreless first period, the Falcons jumped on the scoreboard first three minutes into the second quarter. But it was a short-lived lead. Four-minutes later in the 22
nd minute, senior
Hannah Groves connected with classmate
Anna Tedeschi for the equalizer as the two teams headed into the intermission all square at 1-1.
When the teams returned to the field at the start of the second half, Tedeschi put the Sharks back on top by one, 2-1, finding the back of the cage, three minutes into quarter. The lead held for the next eight minutes, until Fitchburg State was able to sneak one past first-year goalkeeper
Trinity Williamson to tie the game.
With the game tied at two heading into the final stanza, first-year
Hailey Brisson connected with Tedeschi for her third goal of the game to re-gain the lead, 3-2. It appeared as though it was going to be enough as the Sharks kept the Falcons offense at bay, but with five minutes remaining in regulation Fitchburg sent the game to overtime scoring their third goal of the game.
The overtime period favored the Sharks with three penalty corner opportunities in the first two minutes of play. Simmons was unable to knock one past Fitchburg State goalkeeper Isabella Corcoran until the 67
th minute when senior forward
Sydney Gonyea knifed the game-winner past Corcoran to give the Sharks their third win.
