Kinney Tosses One-Hitter as Softball Splits with Suffolk

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Junior right-hander Piper Kinney tossed a one-hitter in a 6-1 come-from-behind victory in game one as Simmons softball split Saturday's doubleheader against non-conference Suffolk University.

Kinney delivered an outstanding performance on the mound, allowing just one hit and one run over seven innings, while striking out eight to improve to 3-4 on the season.

GAME ONE: Simmons 6, Suffolk 1
The game remained largely defensive through the first five innings, with Suffolk breaking the stalemate in the third. However, the Sharks offensive ignited in the home half of the sixth, putting up a crooked number six.

Senior Leah Berdeen roped an RBI single into the center field to bring home Kinney, while first-year Zoe Soule scored the go-ahead run an error by the Rams. Junior Teagan Buckley kept the inning going with a double down the left field line to plate Berdeen and senior Raya Anderson and give Simmons the 4-1 lead.

Junior Emily Deleault followed with a one-out single to bring home Buckley.  Moments later the New Hampshire native came in to score the final run of the frame on the back-end of a double steal.

GAME TWO: Suffolk 7, Simmons 0
The Rams jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs in the top of the second inning. It was all Lilly Newhall needed as she tossed a complete-game one-hitter, while striking three opposing batters.
