Sharks Score In Second To Knot Up Blue Jays

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons University Soccer battled the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Blue Jays to a 1-1 draw in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action tonight at Daly Field.

How It Happened
  • The two teams combined for five shots in the opening 15 minutes before USJ broke through in the 18th minute, finding the back of the net on a shot from just outside the box to take a 1-0 lead. Simmons responded with three more shots to the Blue Jays' zero but couldn't find the equalizer before halftime.
  • Just over five minutes into the second half, the ball bounced around in front of the near post before Ella Askren flicked a pass to Emma McEwan, who lifted a shot over the keeper to even the score at 1-1. The Sharks continued to pressure the USJ defense, with first-year Brianna Peña nearly putting Simmons ahead after getting a shot through the keeper's legs, but the Blue Jays' keeper recovered in time to make the stop.
  • USJ looked to regain the lead late in the half, but goalkeeper Lauren Sanchez and the Simmons backline stood strong to keep the visitors off the board. Neither team was able to find a go-ahead goal, and the Sharks secured a 1-1 draw.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Emma McEwan netted her second goal of the season, marking the second time this year she has scored an equalizer in conference play. Ella Askren recorded her first collegiate assist.
  • Simmons returns to Daly Field on Saturday, October 24, to celebrate Senior Day against Mitchell at 1 p.m.
