No. 6 Sharks Upset No. 3 Blue Jays On The Road To Advance

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 6-seeded Simmons University Sharks are moving on! After battling the No. 3-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Blue Jays through regulation and overtime, Simmons came out on top, 2-1, in a shootout to advance to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Semifinals.

How It Happened
  • USJ struck first, scoring the opening goal to give the home team an early lead.
  • Minutes into the second period, Katy Paveglio carried the ball up top and dribbled into the circle before finding Madyson Reed, who buried a shot into the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
  • USJ held the shot advantage in the third period (5-3), but neither side was able to break through. Simmons outshot the Blue Jays, 3-2, in the fourth, but once again both teams were held scoreless to force overtime.
  • Simmons controlled overtime, out-shooting USJ, 13-5, while earning seven penalty corners compared to two for the Blue Jays. Both goalies came up with big saves to keep their opponents off the board and force a shootout. Haley Bright was outstanding in goal for Simmons, shutting down the few opportunities the Blue Jays were able to generate.
  • In the shootout, Emma Fissel got things started for the Sharks, making a move on the keeper before flicking the ball into the back of the cage. Bright continued her dominance between the posts, setting the tone early. USJ converted its fourth attempt to even the shootout at 1-1. After both teams missed their next attempts, Hailey Brisson stepped up and chipped a shot over the keeper to secure the win for the Sharks and send them to the GNAC Semifinals.
Beyond The Box Score
  • In 80 minutes of regulation and overtime, Haley Bright made 15 saves in the playoff victory.
  • First-year Madyson Reed netted her third goal of the season.
