Simmons University

BOSTON, Mass. – Simmons University Volleyball had their home-opener tonight at the Holmes Center and took the visiting Mount Holyoke College (MHC) Lyons to five sets, but were topped 3-2. 

How It Happened

• The Sharks and Lyons were knotted up 11 times by the midway point of the opening set before the visitors went on top, 20-14. Not going away, the Sharks battled down the stretch, scoring five straight to make it a one-point game (20-19). Gabrielle Pattie quarterbacked the squad as three different Sharks recorded kills before first-years, Madeline Flanagan and Sophia Scott registered a set ending block, 25-23.
• Once again, the second set was tightly contested early before the Lyons began to pull away, opening up an 18-11 lead. Simmons made a late push with three consecutive points, but MHC held on for a 25-20 victory to even the match at one set apiece.
• MHC doubled Simmons up, 16-8 but the Sharks kept on fighting, trimming the deficit to just two points in the final moments and knotting the scoreboard up at 23-all. However, the visitors recorded the final two points to go on top, 2-1 (25-23).
• Simmons responded in the fourth set. Leading 10-9, the Sharks rattled off four straight points to extend their advantage to 14-9 and maintained control the rest of the way, earning a 25-18 win to force a decisive fifth set.
• Each team took their turn with mini runs in the fifth, but the back and forth continued throughout as the Lyons were able to close it out, 15-13.

Beyond The Box Score

• Multiple Sharks reached career-highs this evening as Carolina Rodriguez notched 30 digs, Addison Evans registered 24 kills, while first-year setter Gabrielle Pattie dished out 49 assists, and classmate Sophia Scott had seven kills.
• Simmons remains on their home court this weekend for a tri-match hosting the Dean College Bulldogs and the Bates College Bobcats on Saturday, September 12.
