HENNIKER, N.H. – Simmons field hockey (13-3, 7-2 GNAC) suffered its second conference loss dropping a tough 1-0 decision to New England College (12-3, 7-2 GNAC) on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Coming off a tough loss to Johnson & Wales earlier in the week, the Sharks faced another strong opponent in New England College. The two teams battled and kept each other off the scoreboard throughout the first three periods.
The Sharks looked like they were going to score first in the opening minutes of the second half. Seniors
Sydney Gonyea and
Anna Tedeschi fired shots towards to the goal, but one escape wide and the other rejected by the Pilgrim goalkeeper. They kept the pressure on the New England defense, earning back-to-back penalty corners, but sophomore
Katy Paveglio's shot went wide.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest, New England finally broke up the stalemate with a goal by Cristina Manzi in the 51st minute to earn their 12
th victory of the season.
