BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (14-3, 8-2 GNAC) returned to their winning ways with a convincing, 7-1 win over Dean College (7-10, 4-6 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on Tuesday afternoon.
The Sharks jumped on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter with Simmons' senior tandem of
Sydney Gonyea and
Anna Tedeschi putting the Sharks on top. Gonyea found Tedeschi in front of the net in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead, which they took into the break.
When the teams returned to the playing surface in the second half, the Sharks exploded offensively – rattling off six goals in the third and fourth quarters. A minute into the third Gonyea added a goal to her first half assist, then moments later connected with first-year
Hailey Brisson to give Simmons a three-goal lead.
Late in the third quarter, junior
Ainslee Shrout registered her second collegiate career goal finding the back of the cage on a penalty stroke to send the Sharks into the final stanza with a 4-0 lead.
A minute into the fourth quarter, Gonyea added her third assist of the game connecting with sophomore
Nellie Long. With 10 minutes to play in the period, fellow senior
Hannah Groves scored twice in the span of three minutes to extend the seven. The Bulldogs were able to avoid the shutout scoring in the 59
th minute.
