Pridgeon Guides Volleyball to Victory over Salve Regina on the Road

NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomore Hannah Pridgeon registered her second straight double-double of the season to lead Simmons volleyball (1-5) to a 3-1 victory over non-conference Salve Regina University (0-5) on Thursday evening.
 
In addition to notching 12 kills with just three errors, Pridgeon recorded 22 digs to go along with four aces. Graduate senior Zoë Chatterton followed up with a double-double tallying 12 kills and 15 digs, while graduate senior April Beatty paced the offense with 19 assists in the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1: Simmons 25, Salve Regina 23
The Sharks set the tone, edging out the Seahawks in a tight first set to take a 1-0 match advantage lead. Simmons trailed early by one 6-5, but once they gained an 8-7 lead, they never relinquished the lead and held on for the win.
 
SET 2: Salve Regina 25, Simmons 22
Momentum continued to roll for the Sharks at the beginning of the second set. Back-to-back kills by graduate senior Zoë Chatterton and sophomore Hannah Pridgeon gave Simmons a 7-1 lead and force the Salve Regina to call their first time out.
 
The Seahawks began to chip away at the deficit pulling to within two points, 9-7, before the Sharks answered with a 5-0 run to pull back ahead by seven, 14-7. But Salve Regina answered with a 9-2 run of their own to take an 18-16 lead. As the winds shifted back to the Seahawk bench, Salve Regina held on to take the second set, 25-22, to even up the match.
 
SET 3: Simmons 25, Salve Regina 17
The third set was a barn-burner early on, but the Sharks took advantage Seahawk miscues midway through the set, utilizing a 4-1 run to take a commanding 17-12 lead. Late in the set, Pridgeon gave the Sharks a five-point, 22-17, lead with a kill to seal the win and give Simmons the 2-1 match lead.
 
SET 4: Simmons 25, Salve Regina 11  
Momentum remained on the Sharks side in the fourth set, grabbing an early 6-3 lead which including kills from Chatterton and Pridgeon. The Sharks never looked back, building a quick 14-6 lead before the Seahawks were forced to call their first timeout of the half.
 
However, the timeout did not quell the Sharks offense attack. Junior Illiana Diaz ignited a 7-1 run for Simmons that featured three aces from Pridgeon as the Sharks cruised to take the fourth and final set, 25-11.

  • Sophomore Carolina Rodriguez came two digs shy of tying her career single-game best recording 23 on the night.

Simmons returns to the hard-court on Saturday with a tri-match against Wentworth Institute of Technology (11 a.m.) and Western Connecticut State University (1 p.m.) beginning at Tansey  Gymnasium on the campus of Wentworth.
