WESTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (4-1, 1-0 GNAC) opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action with a 2-1 win over Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks jumped on the scoreboard first, nearly six minutes into the game. Senior forward
Sydney Gonyea connected with classmate
Anna Tedeschi for the game's first goal to give Simmons the 1-0 lead.
It appeared that it was going to remain a one-goal game as the Sharks were in full control of the contest throughout the majority of the first half. But the Chargers were able to break through and score the equalizer in the 22
nd minute. It did not last for very long.
Two minutes later, Gonyea re-gained the lead for the Sharks, knocking a pass from first-year
Hailey Brisson into the back of the cage to give Simmons the 2-1 advantage. The second half was all Sharks, taking total of penalty corners to the Chargers zero as first-year goalkeeper
Trinity Williamson earned her first win of her collegiate career.
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior forward Sydney Gonyea registered a goal and an assist including scoring the game-winner in the 24th minute.
- Fellow senior Anna Tedeschi tallied the first goal of the game in fifth minute.
- First-year goalkeeper Trinity Williamson picked up her second victory of the season recording three saves.
