BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons softball split a midweek non-conference doubleheader against Framingham State with a 9-6 victory in game two on Wednesday afternoon.
GAME 1: Framingham State 3, Simmons 1
Senior center fielder
Raya Anderson helped the Sharks jump on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning with a homerun. It appeared as though it was all junior right-hander
Piper Kinney would need, as she retired the first eight batters she faced before allowing a two-out triple to right center in the home half of the third.
The Marlborough, Massachusetts native settled down and got out of the inning unscathed before setting down the next nine Rams. However, the Rams were able to break through in the home half of the sixth, putting up three runs on timely two-out hitting.
GAME 2: Simmons 9, Framingham State 6
The Shark offense responded in game two. In the top half of the second inning, junior
Trinity Payne scored on a passed ball to take the 1-0 lead. The bats remained hot as Simmons pushed across three runs in the third.
Anderson led of the frame beating out a bunt then quickly got herself into scoring position swiping second before scampering to third on a passed ball. Moments later, Anderson came in to score the Sharks second run of the game after junior
Teagan Buckley reached on an error.
After first-year
Zoe Soule lined a single into centerfield to load the bases, junior right-hander
Ally Hyde helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly to plate senior
Leah Berdeen. Payne capped off the scoring, driving in Soule for the third and final run of the inning to increase the lead to four.
However, the Rams answered breaking up the shutout scoring once in the fourth then put up a three-spot in the home half of the fifth to tie up the ballgame at four.
With the game all square at 4-4, the Shark bats woke up once in the top of the seventh. Sending nine batters to the plate, Simmons put up a crooked number five to take a 9-4 lead. Junior
Emily Deleault opened in the inning with a double into left centerfield. Following back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases, junior
Ally Hyde singled to the left side of the infield to plate both Deleault and Buckley.
Moments later, Payne lined a two-run double down the left field line as pinch-runner Lizzie Sidler and Soule came into score. Payne came into score the final run of the frame on an opposite field double off the bat of junior
Emery Kreidel-Reimer.
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Raya Anderson launched her fourth career homerun in the top of the third of game one to give Simmons the lead.
- Junior right-hander Piper Kinney struck out 17 of the first 18 batters she faced in game one, including nine by way of the strikeout.
- Kinney picked up her fourth win of the season in game two, tossing 1.2 innings of relief, while striking out three opposing batters.
- Junior Ally Hyde drove in three runs in game two, going one-for-three at the dish.
- Junior Trinity Payne continued her outstanding hitting, going two-for-three with a career single-game high three RBI and two runs scored.
