Box Score 2 NASHUA, N.H. – Senior
Raya Anderson and junior
Teagan Buckley lead Simmons softball (12-18) to sweep of Rivier University (8-12) in a mid-week Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North Division battle on Wednesday evening.
In the top of the first inning of game two, Anderson became the sixth player in program history to score 100 runs in their career. An inning later, Buckley became the 21
st player with a base-hit back up the middle in the top of the second.
GAME 1: Simmons 4, Rivier 0
Junior right-hander
Piper Kinney had her way with the Raiders in game one. Tossing a one-hitter, the Marlborough, Massachusetts native fanned 11 opposing batters to earn her seventh victory of the season.
Senior center fielder
Raya Anderson gave Kinney a 1-0 lead before toeing the rubber with a one-out homerun in the top of the first inning. It was more than enough for Kinney, who took a no-hitter into the fourth inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Sharks offense gave Kinney a bit more breathing room. With the bases loaded, junior
Emily Deleault roped a two-run single into the center to extend the lead to 3-0. Moments later, Anderson drove in Kinney with the fourth and final Simmons run.
GAME 2: Simmons 10, Rivier 8
The Sharks jumped on the board first take an early 4-0 lead an inning and half into the contest. In the top of the first after reaching on a bunt single, Anderson scored the first run of the game and her 100
th career run on an error by the pitcher.
Simmons carried their hot bats into the top of the second where they put up a crooked number three to extend their lead to four. However, Rivier answered batting around the order to plate five runs and take their first lead of the day, 5-4.
It was a short-lived lead. The Sharks went back on top by one in the top of the third. Junior
Ally Hyde pulled a no out single into right-center to drive home fellow junior
Trinity Payne. Two batters later junior
Emery Kreidel-Reimer scored the second run of the frame when Kinney reached on an error by the shortstop.
The Raiders regained the lead in the home half of the inning pushing across three runs to take an 8-6 lead. Kinney came on with two outs in the third and struck out Marioles to end the threat and keep the Sharks in the ballgame.
In the top of the fifth, first-year
Zoe Soule put the Sharks back on top, blasting a three-run homerun to take a 9-8 lead. And they never looked back.
Kinney climbed back to .500 on the season, earning her eighth win of the season tossing 4.1 innings with four strikeouts of outstanding relief.
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior right-hander Piper Kinney improved to 8-8 on the season picking up two wins against the Raiders.
- Kinney tossed a one-hitter, striking out 11 Raiders in game; one then threw 4.1 innings of relief in game with four strikeouts.
- Senior center fielder Raya Anderson became the the sixth player in program history to score 100 runs, scoring the first run of game two.
- Junior Teagan Buckley became the 21st player to record 100 hits with her second inning single in game two.
