Sharks Earn First Win Of The Season On The Road

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Simmons University Volleyball traveled out to Connecticut today for a tri-match against their hosts, Mitchell as well as the Regis College Pride. The Sharks cruised to a dominant 3-0 win over Mitchell and fell to the Pride, 3-1.

Simmons vs. Mitchell
  • Tied 3-3, Simmons utilized a handful of Mitchell errors as well as an ace from Emily Ibarra to take the 7-3 advantage. Mitchell came within one (12-11), but the Sharks went on cruise control from there to win the first set, 25-18.
  • Kira Buonopane slammed down a kill to even out the score at 7-all, igniting the Sharks to widen the gap to 11-7. Mitchell locked up the score once more before Simmons closed out the second frame on a 7-2 run (25-19).
  • Simmons scored first and never looked back as the Sharks swept Mitchell, 3-0 after winning the third frame, 25-17.
Simmons vs. Regis
  • Down by a score of 13-7, Simmons went on an incredible 7-0 scoring spree to lead by one (14-13). Regis regained the edge and held on until the final points. Simmons battled back from 23-22 to score the final three to win 25-23.
  • Regis retaliated in the second to even out the score at 1-1 (25-15).
  • The Pride struck first in the third frame, but the Sharks chipped away to make it a 20-19. Not going away without a fight and down 23-20, Simmons rattled in four straight to flip the script, 24-23. However, the Pride buckled down to close it out, 26-24.
  • Simmons positioned themselves within three late in the fourth, but the Pride finished it off to take the overall 3-1 win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • First year Head Coach Grace Kenningham earned her first victory at the helm against Mitchell.
  • Iliana Diaz booked her second highest number of kills on the season against Mitchell.
  • Emily Ibarra set a new career-high of nine digs in the game against Mitchell.
  • Hannah Pridgeon has recorded 14 kills in three straight games.
  • Next up for the Sharks is another tri-match on Saturday, September 20 against Mount Holyoke and Fitchburg State.
