SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Traveling down the Mass. Pike, Simmons University Volleyball played a tri-match today against their hosts, the Mount Holyoke College (MHC) Lyons as well as the Fitchburg State Falcons. The Sharks went to five sets with the Lyons but fell, 3-2 before bouncing back in the night cap against the Falcons, 3-0.
Simmons vs. MHC
- A 4-0 run gave the Sharks a comfortable 13-7 lead in the opening set. Shortly after, three straight kills from Simmons widened the gap to 19-12 en route to the 25-18 win.
- Knotted up at 14-all, the Lyons put down five consecutive points to go on top, 21-15. Simmons did not back down, using a short run of their own to cut the deficit to 23-21, but the home team claimed the final two points for the 25-21 victory.
- First year setter Keagan Serverius spread the ball around in the third as five different Sharks registered kills in the 25-20 win.
- The Lyons came from behind late in the fourth to force a fifth and final set (25-19).
- MHC used their momentum from the fourth to ignite a fast moving fifth set for the overall 3-2 win.
Simmons vs. Fitchburg
- Kate Petrosso put down a kill from Abby Sousa to spark a 5-0 run as the Sharks led, 10-5. Fitchburg did not back away, coming within one multiple times but the Sharks held on for the 25-19 win.
- The Sharks and Falcons traded points early in the second before Simmons capitalized on multiple small sprees to handle the Falcons down the stretch, 25-19.
- With Fitchburg on top, 12-11, Simmons answered back with a 7-1 run to flip the script, 18-13. In the final points, Simmons took advantage of various Falcon miscues to earn the 25-20 win and overall 3-0 sweep.
Beyond The Box Score
- Carolina Rodriguez recorded a season-high 21 digs against MHC.
- Rookie Mia LeBrun booked a career-high 11 kills against Fitchburg.
- Abby Sousa and Hannah Pridgeon both registered double-doubles today in the game against the Falcons.
- The Sharks return to their home court for a 7 p.m. match against the Lasell Univeristy Lasers on Tuesday, September 23.
